Nowadays there is a great deal of interest in wanting to learn all about the buying and selling of antiques, more than possibly at any time in history.

No doubt the popular U.S. TV show ‘The Antiques Road Show’ and the British equvalent, have done a lot to make the antique industry very popular.  What was once thought to be the world of stuffy and snobbish appraisers picking away at Chinese vases and other such oddities has now become a business that is quite intriguing to most people.  Those who perhaps never before had an interest in antiques suddenly saw how much fun it could be to find out that an old afghan or piece of jewelry is actually worth thousands of dollars.

Quite probably buying and selling antiques that you have already attained a good deal of knowledge about or possibly a very keen interest in, can mean an business endeavor that is not only very enjoyable but also financially a good idea.

Patterns

Sewing patterns are still easily purchased today but of course the styles are very different than what you’re going to consider as antique patterns.

Some patterns have survived from the late 1800′s and these include not just adult clothing but also doll’s clothing and accessories, children’s clothing, accessories, and patterns for thing such as tablecloths.

Antique sewing patterns are also quite a part of American history as they really demonstrate not just the styles of clothing that were popular during these times but also demonstrate the hard work that was put into creating these clothes by hand.

Buttons, Thimbles, Spools And Threads

Can you believe that there is actually a market for antique buttons?Or maybe thread?

The reason for this is simply because the materials used for these items were very different than the materials we use today.  Antique buttons are usually fashioned from brass or tin rather than hard plastic.Sometimes they were put together by hand instead of being mass produced the way they are today.

The same goes for thimbles and spools.They are really representitive of a time when most things were undertaken by hand and the materials were all genuine rather than being synthetic blends.
